If you're in a market dominated by long-haul operators, rural routes, or industries where payload is paramount, you likely have more runway. But that doesn't mean ignoring the trend—it means monitoring it closely and positioning to move when your specific customer base starts making the shift.
In terms of parts inventory, the hybrid transition is arguably the more immediate opportunity for most shops. Hybrid commercial trucks—which retain diesel powertrains while adding electric assist—are finding broader adoption across more use cases than full EVs. The parts ecosystem for these vehicles is more familiar, and the service needs overlap significantly with traditional diesel expertise.
The Hybrid Middle Ground
Several operators we spoke with landed on hybrid commercial vehicles as their current sweet spot. Kenworth's T680E and Peterbilt's Model 579EV have received attention, but Class 6 and 7 hybrid medium-duty trucks from Isuzu, Hino, and others are quietly logging real-world miles for delivery and service fleets with solid results.
"It's the best of both worlds for where we are right now," said fleet manager David Chu, who operates a 30-vehicle service fleet in the Chicago metro area. "We get meaningful fuel savings, the drivers don't have range anxiety, and my mechanics can work on the diesel side of the powertrain without specialized EV training.
